Beyond the Walls: The 7th Annual Prison Health Care Summit Date: Tuesday, June 9, 2009 Location: Student Center of Temple University Address: 1755 N. 13th Street. Registration: Register online
Beyond the Walls: Prison Health Care & Reentry Summit will bring together former prisoners, advocacy organizations, faith based organizations, healthcare providers, activists, re-entry programs, parole/probation officers, and prison staff. We will talk about health and re-entry challenges facing persons who are incarcerated and persons re-entering our communities, including HIV, mental health issues, substance use, housing, jobs, mentorship and educational programs and focus on community responses to the crisis in the criminal justice system.
This year we are focusing some of the Beyond the Walls: Prison Health Care and Reentry Summit content on activism and community mobilization – campaigns that have won change, current efforts, and possibilities for the future. Workshops will reflect the needs of prisoners and former prisoners and will highlight the work being done to improve conditions inside the prison walls and in the communities to which prisoners are returning home. This track will emphasize movements and campaigns led by former prisoners.
This year’s Prison Summit workshop content will be built along six main track areas:
Accessing Services for Reentry
- This track will highlight the services that are available to support individuals coming home from prison and jail, including accessing public benefits, housing, job training, and educational programs.
Activism and Community Empowerment
- This track will emphasize local campaigns, led by former prisoners, which are working to improve conditions inside the prison walls and in the neighborhoods to which individuals are returning home.
Faith Based Prison Work
- This track will explore diverse faith approaches to prison work – including Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Buddhist perspectives on working in prisons and jails. This track will also explore the role of the faith community in jail diversion and reentry programming and support.
LGBTQI Issues
- Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender-non-conforming, and queer individuals face increased abuse when behind bars, and are often met with inadequate services to support their transition back into the community. This track will look at local efforts to meet the needs of trans and gender-non-conforming inmates, as well as national efforts to meet the needs of LGBTQ individuals behind bars and in their transition home.
Prison Health: Physical, Mental, Behavioral
- Topics in this track include mental health, addiction and recovery, HIV, and terminal illness. Each break out session will address the health needs of specific populations, while providing information on resources available to support health both inside and outside of correctional facilities.
Women, Youth, and Families
- This track will focus on the impact of incarceration on families, children with incarcerated parents, and reentry supports that facilitate family reunification. It will also look at youth enmeshed in the criminal justice system, youth empowerment programs, and explore the experiences of women behind bars, with a special focus on pregnancy during incarceration.
